RNIB Activate

RNIB Activate delivered a programme of activities for children and young people living with sight loss and their families across Scotland.

The Adventure Network provides an accessible and exciting friendship network to enable children and young people with learning disabilities in East and North Ayrshire to come together and meet children/young people with similar interests to have adventures and regular events in a safe, friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Scotland Family Camp

We ran a weekend Family Camp for children with serious and life limiting illnesses, their parents or carers and siblings.

The camp catered for families from across Scotland and provided the whole family with a much needed respite from the pressures of daily life.

We provided grants directly to carers who look after someone with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), and to people with MND who have a carer who will also benefit. The project covers the whole of Scotland.

We provided grants directly to carers who live in Scotland and are caring for someone with a diagnosis of dementia.

Nurtured Nature is our Carers allotment project. The adult group meet weekly and attend individually. All 6 of our Young Carers groups take turns at attending. It gives Carers a chance of fresh air and exercise, learning new skills, new friendships and sampling the produce.

DofE Paddlers on Tour

A team originally of 8 young people, but dropping to 7 got together to learn navigation, wild camp craft, (including outdoor cooking skills), videography and canoeing skills.  The events occurred in East Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lochgoilhead and on Loch Goil and Loch Lomond.

The team canoed on open water, took part in self-rescue skills, (capsize drill) and camped on remote islands on the Loch.  In addition a water sports based residential opportunity for 10 young people lasting 5 days was provided in Lochgoilhead.  They then worked together to produce a video summary and have spoken at events to promote their activities.

Home and Away

To date we have delivered respite services to 2 young people and 3 carers, a 5 week arts club and an 8 week photography club.

Young people have gone out for dinner, gone to the pantomime, visited local fetes, had walks along the beach, massage/girly pampering sessions, visited local parks, taken lots of photographs, made lots of art works and held an exhibition.

The Butterfly Club Summer Holiday Club

The Club was a success, partners working together, ensured the service achieved being Purposeful, Meaningful and Safe.

We ran the summer club for 5 weeks. Alternated 2 days one week and 3 days the following week. Each child receiving 12 days over the period. Every child had the opportunity of fulfilling their individual dream day.  The last day was our Family Funday which included an awards ceremony.

Summary of Excursions: (swimming pool, Dean Castle, speedboats, All Abilities Bikes, Horse Riding, softplay, Local Play parks, ferry trip to Millport)
Ball pond, Bouncy Castle, Inflatable obstacle course, Zoo Lab, Storyteller, Drake Music.

We delivered a holiday club for 19 pupils from Corseford School over 10 days during the Summer Holidays.The Club daily hours were 10am-4pm. Staff were recruited from existing school staff on a 1:1 ratio.

All carers and pupils were surveyed before the Club and as a result,a range of activities were offered eg speed boats, barge trips, archery, bowling, accessible cycling,swimming. Activities tailored to each child’s age and abilities. Week 1 for the younger pupils and week 2 for older.

Where requested, taxis and trained escorts were provided for the journeys.This significantly extended the break each family enjoyed.
