Over the last year we have been running a programme of short breaks (residential and day events) for carers, and people being cared for, from the Gypsy/Traveller community living in Perth & Kinross, Lothian and Argyll.

We provided a 2 week Summer Club, including transport and intensive staffing, for 17 children with complex support needs.

One tailored week for older and one for younger pupils. An activity and play-based club for children unable to access community run schemes due to their high level care needs.

Down's Syndrome Scotland Creative Breaks Fund

We provided grants directly to carers who care for an adult who has Down’s Syndrome who lives with them.

Calvert 2015

We had a 2 night activity break at Calvert Trust. Our young people enjoyed activities not normally available to them due to their disabilities.

Parent/carers who accompany them also had a chance to socialise knowing the young people are in a safe, secure environment and having fun.

Scotland Family Camp 2015

We ran a weekend Family Camp for families of children with serious and life limiting illnesses and disabilities.

13 families attended our camp, comprising 45 individual campers, made up of the ill child(ren), siblings and parents and / or carers. The campers came from across Scotland to attend camp which took place at Tulliallan castle in Fife from 15th to 17th May 2015.

Social & Emotional Support to Deaf Children and their Families

West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society provides social and emotional support to deaf children and their families.

Better breaks funding enabled us to offer many opportunities for our young people to meet and mix with an age appropriate peer group at our Saturday Sign Activity Club, a youth group and in partnership with St Roch’s Secondary School an after school club.

Blazing Saddles

FABB Scotland’s Cycling Project, Blazing Saddles, has changed lives in varied and positive ways from regions as far apart as Angus and West Lothian.

All of this has provided respite care for parents and carers. From trikes to tandems families are cycling out together and experiencing the outdoors in a way that is improving everyone’s health and well-being.

Cafe Holiday Club 2014

The Cafe Holiday Club provided fun, short break recreational activities for disabled children and young people, promoting social integration and healthy lives through play, sport, dance and drama in an environment of respect and the promotion of positive behaviours.

This gave parents and care providers the opportunity and the time, to enjoy a short break from their caring roles.
