APNA School Holiday Playscheme
A story by Barnardos
We provided a playscheme for children and young people where they took part in a variety of activities to improve their health and well being. Their parents/carers then had time to have a break from their caring role.
What APNA School Holiday Playscheme did
5 volunteers were recruited to work in the club. Local agencies and families’ project works with were informed about the service. Glasgow Social Work was also informed about the service. 26 families received around 72 hours service break during school holidays period. There were 14 session in total over the school holiday period which included summer, Christmas and Spring school holidays.
There were a lot of activities organised which included indoor and outdoor activities. The outdoor activities including taking children and young people for swimming, park and local attractions like museums, library, and indoors they took park and art and craft design and playing different games.
Their carers used their break doing different things like taking their other children out, parents spending times together and going out with other family members. The young carers in the family had time out with friends and focus on their studies etc.
When Ruhksar attended the club for 2 days Sonia worked as an admin for a project and got valuable experience. It is hoped that this experience will enable Sonia to get a permanent part time job. She feels that the responsibility of Rukhsar is also affecting her health. She already has some medical issues and feels that she is ignoring her own health problems.
co-ordination between arms and legs, and they require 24 hour care and attention. Their mother is the sole carer for them both. Although their father helps out whenever he can, he works long hours and is not at home during the busy evening routine of the family.
Mrs. Raja also looks after her elderly mother-in-law. She has been struggling to manage the household responsibilities as well as looking after her 2 boys. Although Mrs. Raja gets 1 hours help in the morning for the personal care of both boys, she desperately needs help in the evening. The project we are proposing will help Mrs. Raja as we would take both boys twice a week so that she can have some time for herself. This will make a big difference in the quality of life of this family, and for those 2 days, Mrs. Raja can do things to release her stress.
