Barnardos Short Breaks - Dundee
A story by Barnardos Dundee Family Support Team
The Barnardos Dundee Family Support Team is a community based support service for children and young people in the age range 0-18yrs who have significant learning disabilities and live in Dundee.
We have promoted and run residential short breaks since 1986 . In 2014/15 with the support of Better Breaks we ran two short break residential weekends .
What Barnardos Short Breaks - Dundee did
During the period Oct 10th -14th 2014 we ran a 4 day Family Weekend to the Nethybridge Outdoor Centre, part of the Abernethy Trust which was attended by 6 families who access our service, and were supported by 6 carers -3 of whom were staff,2 were volunteers and one - a Community Learning and Development student on placement. Some 24 people in all took part.
From April 3rd-6th 2015 we ran a 4 day short break to Netherurd House in West Linton which was attended by 14 people in all, 9 young people with 5 accompanying helpers 5 -4 project volunteers and one staff member. This short break was as a direct alternative to an activity break, with day trips to Edinburgh and places of interest the main feature of the weekend.
What Barnardos Dundee Family Support Team has learned
We have learned that the model for both breaks works well and that there is a high demand among families for both types of short break opportunities, and
without the BB funding neither break would have taken place.
Night time routine was a minor challenge on our city break with one young person having a disrupted sleep pattern which placed an additional demand on staff and volunteers.
On our city break we included a mum who has a learning disability who accompanied her 8 year old son. This was in response to difficult family circumstances.
