Calvert Kielder Trip
A story by Linn Park Youth Group
We organised a 2 night activity break for 13 young people and 13 parent/carers. This trip enabled both young people and parent/carers to try new activities and meet other families
What Calvert Kielder Trip did
The trip consisted of 13 young people and 13 parent/carers having a 2 night break in May 2014 at The Calvert Trust, Kielder Forest Park. The funding supported accommodation and activities at the centre.
The accommodation provided was in specially adapted chalets/rooms with wet rooms, hoists and disabled access, enabling the young people and parent/carers to relax and enjoy their short break in appropriate surroundings.
The activities were supervised by a team of Activity Leaders from Calvert Trust who had specialist knowledge and equipment to enable all the children to access all of the activities on offer at the centre. The activities undertaken included zipwire, king swing, woodland walks, sailing, canoeing, motor boat cruise, hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, archery, climbing wall and abseiling.
In the evening the families would meet up in the communal areas for meals and got to know each other by sharing their experiences. The young people enjoyed spending time with their peers and joined in with organised evening activities.
All of the parent/carers and young people attend Linn Park Youth Club.
What Linn Park Youth Group has learned
I think all of us learned that nothing is impossible.
The fund has made a huge difference to our organisation. Young people have become so much closer.
Parent/carers swapping contact details means they will ask for support from others in a similar situation.
