Getting a Break
A story by southwestkinshipcare group
Our project was a holiday break for carers and the children on holiday to Blackpool for a respite break.
We also have a fortnightly support group for kinship carers, kinship carers are grandparents or family members who have full time care of a child due to parental addiction, mental health issues or bereavement.
What Getting a Break did
Jackie - Our break took place over four nights, we went to Haven Caravan Park at Marton Mere in Blackpool. This respite trip was for carers who regularly attend our fortnightly support group and the kinship children they look after.
There was many activities for the carers and children to take part in at the caravan park and Blackpool City Centre which was near by. The carers were able to relax while the kids did some activities within the caravan park.
What southwestkinshipcare group has learned
We have become closer as a group and more understanding of each other, we have learned carers need to take care of themselves too and we shared the job of applying for funding arranging where to go and booking transport.
